Last week, I walked past the Shard at dusk and saw a dozen strangers laughing under a canopy of LED lights. The view of the Thames was just the start; the real draw was the cocktail menu that listed a “Bramble” made with gin, fresh lemon, and a splash of blackberry liqueur. It wasn’t the first time I’d heard about London’s rooftop bars, but the sheer number of options now feels like a citywide competition for the best sunset.
Skyline, Skyline, Skyline: The Three Most Photogenic Spots
1. Ozone at the Ritz – The rooftop is a 40‑metre platform that offers a 360‑degree view of the city. The bar’s signature drink, the “Ritz Royale,” is a mix of elderflower gin and sparkling wine that tastes as sophisticated as the décor. The only downside? The entrance fee of £12 covers a single drink, so you’ll need to budget extra if you want more than one.
2. The Shard’s 30‑Above – With a floor‑to‑ceiling glass wall, this spot feels like a private observatory. The “Shard Sunset” cocktail, a blend of mezcal and pomegranate, is a hit among locals. Reservations are mandatory, and the bar closes at 2 a.m., so plan your night accordingly.
3. Sky Garden’s Serpentine – Unlike the other two, this bar is part of a public garden. The “Garden Gimlet” uses gin, lime, and a hint of mint, served in a glass that doubles as a miniature terrarium. Entry is free, but the bar is open only until 11 p.m., which can be a constraint for late‑night revelers.
Hidden Gems Worth the Extra Mile
While the big names get most of the headlines, a few lesser‑known rooftops are stealing the spotlight. The Bar at The Bank offers a 45‑minute “drinks and jazz” package for £20, which includes a complimentary glass of champagne. The Skybar at The Old Vic has a secret menu: a “Moscow Mule” made with locally sourced ginger beer. Both venues require a 15‑minute wait during peak hours, but the experience is worth it.
What Makes a Rooftop Bar Worth Your Time?
- Atmosphere – A well‑designed space with comfortable seating and minimal noise from the street.
- View – A panoramic perspective that changes with the sunset.
- Drink Innovation – A menu that goes beyond classic cocktails.
- Accessibility – Easy transport links and reasonable opening hours.
When I booked a table at the Shard, I was told the bar would be ready in 10 minutes. The staff greeted me with a complimentary glass of champagne, a small gesture that set the tone for the rest of the evening. The only hiccup was the limited seating during the last hour of the night, which meant I had to move to a different table to keep the view unobstructed.
For those who enjoy a mix of drinks and digital entertainment, the rooftop scene in London is a perfect backdrop. The vibrant skyline, combined with innovative cocktails, makes it easy to unwind after a long day.
